内容記述 | This study describes the process of inhibition that learners of a second language may experience in the context of their target-language community. Learners’ inhibition is defined as an interpersonally driven psychological phenomenon that arises as a defensive mechanism designed to protect the ego and results in an unwillingness to use a second language. Observations of and semi-structured and open-ended interviews with 11 international students in Japanese universities were conducted. These qualitative data were analyzed using the Straussian grounded theory method to identify the psychological phenomenon involved. The model of the inhibition process that emerged is characterized by four major components: intolerance of ambiguity, low self-esteem, avoidance, and thick boundaries between the self and significant others. The relationships among these components indicate that extremely inhibited learners withdraw into a cycle of inhibition from which it is difficult to escape. The findings suggest that if learners are unable to achieve their desired objectives or if they cannot establish good relationships with the objects they favor, they internalize the inhibitory process of distance or rejection. As a pedagogic implication, it is important to promote the interpersonal dynamics to overcome such inhibitory states. | |||||||
