The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) on creativity and clarify the results and issues in a technology class at junior high school level. The problem-based learning was practiced after dividing the roles of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians (STEM) in each group of participants. The effect of on creativity were analyzed by utilizing a creativity scale which consists of six factors: flexibility, analyticity, enterprising, sustainability, imagination, and cooperativeness.As a result of analysis indicated that the flexibility, sustainability, and imaginative factors improved after learning. In addition, the analyticity of scientists and mathematicians, the enterprising of technologist, the enterprising and cooperativeness of engineers improved. In contrast, the cooperativeness of engineers declined.Clarifying the roles of STEM allowed the students to better concentrate on each problem and contents of learning. Therefore, some factors of creativity improved after problem-based learning were initiated. However, some issues of problem-based learning were identified. First, prior learning about sensors and actuators was inadequate. Second, visualizing the data using tables and graphs were not enough due to the number of measurement being too small. Lastly, worksheets need to be devised to provide appropriate feedback to individuals and groups. |
