For this research, Uganda and Japan were selected as representativecountries of ESL and EFL contexts. An online questionnaire was developed and distributedto participants to explore what students at a relatively similar academic level in these twodifferent English language contexts think about the role of English in their lives. Each groupconsisted of 38 students, making a total sample size of 76. The findings revealed somesimilarities: both groups were highly motivated and viewed English learning valuable.However, regarding the primary use of English in their lives, participants from the ESLcontext (Uganda) viewed English as a prerequisite for formal employment, whereas theircounterparts from the EFL setting (Japan) anticipated using English mainly forcommunication with English speakers abroad.
