Mashu Volcano is characterized by repeated explosive eruptions over 46 thousand years and formed into a caldera（5.1x 7.5 km diameter）through successive Plinian eruptions and subsequent large-scale pyroclastic flows about 7,500 years ago. The formation history of Mashu Volcano is divided into an older stage（46-19 ka）and a younger stage（18-0 ka）. In the older stage，the stratovolcanoes with lateral volcanic edifices mainly formed through pumice and scoria eruptions. The younger stage is divided into the new stratovolcano growth period（18-12 cal ka）, the Mashu caldera formationperiod（7.5 ka）, and the post-caldera formation period of the Kamuishu island（6.5 ka）and the Kamuinupuri（5.5-0.95ka）. Three large-scale pyroclastic events during the younger stage occurred at intervals of approximately 7,000 years：Ma-l（14 ka）, the caldera-forming eruptions of Ma-j-f（7.5 ka）, and Ma-b（0.95 ka）. The cumulative magma eruptionvolume was 15.8 km3 over the past 14,000 years and the average magma eruption rate was 1.13 km3／ky. In the SiO2-TiO2-K2O diagrams of bulk rock compositions, the magmas that caused the caldera formation differed from those of thepost- and pre-caldera stages, suggesting that the magma plumbing system was distinct during the caldera-forming period. |
