内容記述 | A lack of confidence and willingness to speak English is a common difficulty for Japanese students. For students majoring in English and English education, however, these problems may be more prominent compared to non-English majors. Specifically, the students' identities as English majors leads to a potential discrepancy between their public image as having high English language abilities compared to their actual language proficiency. This study investigated the experiences of three students majoring in English language education with respect to their perceptions of their own public and private identities as English majors as well as how these perceptions affected their motivations towards English language learning. These experiences were examined from the perspective of the L2 Motivational Self System model (e.g., Dörnyei, 2009) with specific attention to the role of self-discrepancy in affecting the students’ motivation. The participants reported a strong expectation for them to have high English language abilities from other non-major students, and this public image of themselves was contrasted with their own lack of confidence. As a result, some participants avoided opportunities to speak in English class and experienced demotivation towards English language learning. | |||||||
