The aim of this study was to identify effective stretching techniques for relieving back pain and improving flexibility through an intervention experiment, using two practical books on stretching and involving eight male students with a history of back pain. The intervention experiments both demonstrated an improvement in the flexibility of the subjects( p<.01- .001).Comparing the two books, a significant improvement in flexibility was observed with book B (ranked 10th in sales)(p<.01- .001).It was inferred that stimulation of the quadratus lumborum and external oblique muscle by the stretching intervention of twisting and lateral bending movements might have been directly reflected in the subjects’ performance in the flexibility test. Meanwhile, in the interview survey of the eight subjects, all favored practical book A( ranked 1st in sales). This result indicated a difference between subjective experiences and objective values. In recent years, prepurchase services for practical books have been improving steadily such as those that allow users to try a book for 30 days. It was suggested that it is important to select a book that can enforce continuation in addition to achieving the purpose of relieving back pain.
