内容記述 This study examined the effects of diversifying the snow surface in the school garden on
the physical activity intensity of outdoor play in preschool children during the severer
winter, utilizing snow as a material to create a play space. Twenty children belonging to
one kindergarten in Asahikawa city participated in this study. A total of five trials were
conducted, twice in December and three times in January-February. Before going out, each
subject wore a bib and wrapped a belt attached with an activity monitor and a GPS logger
around the navel. We collected the bibs and belts immediately after the outdoor play. The
analysis period was 40 minutes from the start of the outdoor play. After we converted the
longitude and latitude coordinates of the GPS data to rectangular coordinates, we mapped
activity intensity data to position data and created a play heat map with 1m×1m mesh.
The school garden was divided into rough snow, snow removal/consolidated, and snowy
mountains. A December trial with less snow cover was a control, and two January February trials were experimental. For each mesh in the heat map, we calculated
differences in the activity intensity between experimental trials and control and conducted
a one-sample t-test to examine the differences were not equal to zero. As a whole, the
activity intensity in snowy mountains was more prominent in the control trial than in
experimental trials. Various play promotions increased the activity intensity in rough snow.
The diversification of the snow surface in the school garden can contribute to ensuring the
amount of physical activity and bringing out the various activities of children by making the
properties of each snow surface function.
