内容記述 | This paper aims to examine how senior high school students in countries where Englishis taught as a Second Language(ESL), and as a Foreign Language(EFL) respectively, perceive English. For this research, Uganda and Japan were selected as representativecountries of ESL and EFL contexts. An online questionnaire was developed and distributedto participants to explore what students at a relatively similar academic level in these twodifferent English language contexts think about the role of English in their lives. Each groupconsisted of 38 students, making a total sample size of 76. The findings revealed somesimilarities: both groups were highly motivated and viewed English learning valuable. However, regarding the primary use of English in their lives, participants from the ESLcontext (Uganda) viewed English as a prerequisite for formal employment, whereas theircounterparts from the EFL setting (Japan) anticipated using English mainly forcommunication with English speakers abroad. Regarding the question of whether theysupported making English as a compulsory subject at schools in their respective countries, the results showed that both groups were in favor, albeit with varying percentage—the ESLgroup showed stronger support at 82%, compared to 58% in the EFL group. | |||||||||
